Joan Butterfield
Artist     Art Innovator     Art Curator     Author

Early in Joan career, she was drawn to the  17th century art form of decoupage.  An art form, that allowed her to tap into her creative energy and give her the freedom to apply and utilize her artistic skills.

It is with the basics of this ancient art form, combined with current art techniques, she was able to develop what has now become known as “The Butterfield” technique.

In 2012, Joan was commission by the Pan American Games Committee, to represent Bermuda and had the pleasure of being a part of the World Wide Art Project “Play Me I’m yours” - She took an upright piano and turn it into a little pink Bermuda cottage.
It became quite the attraction while sitting on the sidewalk outside the Royal Ontario Museum in downtown Toronto.

and unusual art commission.

Joan’s exciting journey continues, with her most recent works of “Photo Artistry” - The pushing of Photography, beyond the boundaries of the conventional.
Each of these works originates from a photo. She has found a way to layer, blend and apply various effects and filters. Thus creating composition truly fit for fine art canvas.

Joan says this manner of artistry is truly magical. It’s through this magic she has found herself creatively going where she has never been before.  View her latest works at:

Artist Statement

It has been my aim from the onset of my career, to produce art that will become a vehicle, that aesthetically links my past to my future.  I have striven to document and educate myself and others about my rich culture and heritage, and have endeavored over the course of my journey to present an artistic, positive presentation of the African Diaspora.
